Replace periodic insulation testing! Increase fire and equipment protection!

Thanks to various standards and regulations of the accident insurance institutions/national erection regulations and trade association ordinances, an indispensable contribution is made to safety in the workplace. However, the associated measures often represent a reduction in terms of productivity and increased efficiency.

With the smartRCM product family developed by Doepke Schaltgeräte GmbH and twingz in cooperation, economic goals and preventive maintenance are supported at the same time.

PERMANENT DIFFERENTIAL CURRENT MONITORING
smartRCM is predictive analytics & industrial IoT service that permanently monitors industrial assets to ensure potentials for increasing efficiency and preventing electrical fires using monitoring, and to receive alerts BEFORE safety shutdowns occur if leakage currents or other electrical variables become alarmingly high.

Permanent real-time monitoring of electrical consumption and residual currents, combined with predictive deep learning analytics and built-in alerting and notification functions, optimizes planned but costly shutdowns.

Components, such as the Doepke residual current transformer, which is certified according to EN62020, allow the plant operator to replace the recurring insulation test (ÖVE/ÖNORM E 8001-6-62) with permanent residual current monitoring.

The BENEFIT

Service interruptions are reduced!
System protection is increased!

Doepke and twingz are cooperating

Electricity expertise meets software excellence: Doepke Schaltgeräte GmbH from Norden, Lower Saxony, and twingz development GmbH from Vienna are developing an innovative monitoring system for electrical installations together.

Who we are

After intensive preparation, Andreas Müller, Managing Director of Doepke Schaltgeräte GmbH, and Werner Weihs-Sedivy, CEO and founder of twingz development GmbH, officially agreed on cooperation between the two companies in the middle of September. The aim is to develop and market an intelligent monitoring system for electrical installations. The companies from Northern Germany and Austria complement each other perfectly:

For more than 60 years, Doepke Schaltgeräte GmbH has been an expert in the detection of differential currents and shutdown in the event of dangerous residual currents. The company’s product portfolio, therefore, includes a wide range of different residual current circuit breakers as well as residual current monitors. These converters are sensitive to universal currents, detect residual currents from 0 – 100 kHz and report them directly to a data network via Ethernet interface.

This data provides the operator of an electrical system with information about its current status. However, it is also possible to use the data for predictions about the future condition of the system if the data is collected in large quantities, stored, and correlated. This is exactly what Doepke and twingz are developing in their intelligent monitoring system.

In order to prevent operational interruptions, especially in the industrial sector, and to increase the safety of electrical systems, the monitoring system not only visualizes and manages residual currents but also learns the electrical behavior of the system (ML) and can make predictions about future events in the electrical system. This enables preventive intervention before the system shuts down or even causes damage. These capabilities require cloud software and methods of artificial intelligence (AI). This is where the strengths of twingz Development GmbH lie.

Our company, founded in 2010 as a start-up, develops software methods for predictive maintenance and predictable energy consumption in industry, facility management and utilities. For this purpose, we analyze data from the areas of electricity, water, gas and temperature in industrial plants and generate progression and consumption profiles from this data. develops software methods for predictive maintenance and predictable energy consumption in industry, facility management, and utilities. The cooperation project
The cooperation project – an intelligent monitoring system for electrical installations – combines the smart residual current monitoring of the Doepke converters with the AI methods of twingz. It will be of particular interest for operators of larger industrial plants and also for insurers.

The underestimated danger: 1 out of 2,000 wind turbines suffer a fire every year!

The Caithness Windfarm Information Forum (CWIF) reported 20 wind turbine fires worldwide in 2011 and 2012. This corresponds to a total of 160 accidents involving wind turbines. Therefore, fires accounted for 12.5% of all incidents in both years.

Fires are the second most common cause of accidents involving wind turbines

CWIF identified 200 reported fires between 1995 and 2012, an average of 11,7 fires per year. This makes fires the second most common cause of reported accidents in wind turbines. All in all, according to the study, the 3 most important causes of accidents in wind turbines are

  • Blade failure (19%)
  • Fire (15%)
  • Structural failure (9.7%)

91% of all fires are not reported!

In 2011 an estimated 200,000 wind turbines were operated worldwide. Based on the data in the IAFSS report, we can assume that there were 117 fires (both reported and unreported) in the same year. This means that in 2011, 1 out of 1,710 turbines caught fire.

twingz predictive analytics and what fire statistics for wind turbines mean for wind farms

Overall, the data show that fires in wind turbines occur relatively rarely. However, a single wind turbine fire can be very expensive for a wind farm. A turbine quickly costs over $1 million and generates $1,500 to $2,000 in revenue per day. Offshore turbines that are larger and more complex can be up to three times as expensive, but they also generate more revenue.

With “predictive analytics” from twingz, the permanent monitoring of plant and stress conditions, operators are able to detect critical developments early enough to prevent the possibility of unfortunate damage. In this context, reliability-oriented maintenance is particularly worth mentioning.

We look forward to hearing from you!

The twingz team wishes you many new insights.
